How to Type Degree Symbol in Word/Excel and Mac?

A degree is a typographical symbol that is used as a unit in physical sciences for different measurements.
In mathematics, it is used to measure the angle between any two non-collinear lines from a single point. (e.g. ∠A=35°)

To type the degree symbol in Microsoft Word on a Windows PC, you can use the Alt code like diameter alt code, alpha symbol, etc. on the keyboard. Press the Alt key and type 0176 on the keyboard. This will insert the ° into your document at the current cursor location.
To insert it on a Mac, you can use the “Option + Shift + 8” keyboard shortcut.

5 Ways to Make Degree in Word:

There are five different ways to insert degree in Microsoft word.

  1. Simple Library
  2. Alt Code
  3. Copy and Paste
  4. Autocorrect Method
  5. Keyboard Short Keys

Step 1: Symbol Library

  1. Open Microsoft word, Excel, or Google docs on your pc.
  2. Click on blank documents/sheets.
  3. Next click on the insert option.
  4. Click on “SYMBOL” at the end of the row.

Here you can find different special options, click on your required symbol and insert it.
If you can’t easily find the ° then you can type the character code “00B0”.

Step 2: Alt code

In this step, we use alt “CODE” to type degree on Ms Word.

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Click on Blank Document.
  3. Enable the Numeric keypad by pressing Fn & NumLock.
  4. Press Alt key and type 0176 on keyboard (NumLock must be on).
  5. It will convert your code into (°).

Step 3: Copy & Paste

This is very simple technique and can be used on any device as mentioned above which is copying and pasting.
On PC, you can copy (°) from here and then paste it on MS WORD, EXCEL or Google docs, etc.

Step 4: Autocorrect Method

When you type any letter wrong, autocorrect automatically correct it. In this way, you can adjust manually any letter into its corresponding sign.
a. Place your cursor at the location where you want to insert the it.
b. Open the “Insert” menu and select the “Symbol” option.
c. In the “Symbol” window, select the “Symbol” and scroll down to find the °.
d. Select ° and click on autocorrect.
e. Type “Deg” in the replace box and click on add and save.
Now when you type “Deg” in Microsoft word, it will be automatically converted into °.

Step 5: Keyboard Short Keys

To type the degree using keyboard shortcuts, you can use the Unicode “00B0” in word.

  1. Place your cursor at the location where you want to insert the degree character.
  2. Type the Unicode value “00B0” into your document.
  3. Press the “Alt + X” keys on your keyboard. This will cause the Unicode value to be replaced with the °.

Emoji Menu:

To type the degree text using the emoji menu, you can follow these steps:

Open the emoji menu on your device. This can typically be done by pressing the “Windows + ;” keys on a Windows PC, or by pressing the “Command + Control + Space” keys on a Mac.

Search for the degree using the search box in the emoji menu. You can also scroll through the menu to find it.

Select the degree from the symbol menu and it will be inserted into your document at the current cursor location.

How to type degree character in excel? (CHAR FORMULA)

In Ms Excel, You can get the degree by inserting the CHAR formula.

  • Open Microsoft Excel on your PC.
  • Click on Blank Sheet.
  • Type =CHAR(176) in any cell.
  • Press enter and it will convert your code into °.
  • Now if you want to type 45° on excel then type 45 in any cell and then insert “&” and write CHAR(176).
  • The “&” operator is used to join the 45 and degree.
  • Now this will turn into 45° by entering 45&CHAR(176).

How to type degree on mac?

In MacBook, it can be inserted in two ways.

Step 1:

In this step, we will use the degree letter shortcut on mac.

  • Open textbook on Mac.
  • Press & hold Shift+Option+8.

This code will be converted into a degree.

Step 2:

  1. Open notepad or any file where you want to type degree.
  2. Click EDIT on the top of the page.
  3. A drop-down menu will appear.
  4. Click Emoji & Symbols and next click the Character Viewer window.
  5. Click on Punctuation.
  6. Now you can find the degree from the given symbols.
  7. Double-click on the degree.
  8. It will be inserted on your textboard.

How to type/insert Degree by using a character map?

In Microsoft Windows, you can insert degree by using a character map.

  • Click on the search bar on your screen and type the character map and click on it.
  • Here you will see different characters.

  • You will see the degree on your screen.
  • Click on a degree then select it and copy it.
  • You can paste where you want to insert it.

How to type degree on Android?

Step 1:

Double-click on the degree from here and then copy it.
Paste your text file by pressing on the screen.

Step 2:

Open any text application on android.
Click on 123 and it will show numeric and symbol keypad.
If you can’t find a degree here then click on (=\<).
Click on the ° to insert.

How to type degree on iOS?

In iPhone/iPad, there’s no default degree option on the keypad but we can insert degree by two simple methods.

Step 1:

Double-click on the degree from here and then copy it.
Paste your text file by pressing on the screen.

Step 2:

Open any text application on iPhone/iPad.
Click on 123 & it will show a numeric keypad.
Press and hold zero(0) and it will show a menu with a degree.


There are multiple methods to insert the degree symbol on PC and Mac. My favourite method to insert it in Microsoft word is the autocorrect option. On the mac, it is preferable to use short keys to insert it.
